Aaron Copland
1900 - 1990
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Born: November 14, 1900 in Brooklyn, NY
Died: December 2, 1990, in Westchester, NY
Nationality: American        Instrument: Piano
Musical Period: 20th Century   1900-now  (MODERN)
Education:
Although he was probably one of the greatest American composers, Aaron Copland did not grow up in a musical family. His parents were Russian immigrants who never even went to a concert. Copland went to France as a teenager to study music with Nadia Boulanger, who helped him create his own style.
Contemporaries: Barber, Stravinsky, Prokofiev

Popular Compositions:
Lincoln Portrait, Rodeo, Fanfare for the Common Man, Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, The Tender Land, Ching-a-ring-ching-chaw
Fun Facts about Copland's Life: Copland wrote music with a very “American" sound. He borrowed from American legends and folk music and incorporated them into his music. Some of his most famous pieces are his ballets -- Billy the Kid, Rodeo, and Appalachian Spring. Billy the Kid and Rodeo are about the Wild West. He also wrote music for movies. Copland was one of the first composers to successfully incorporate jazz rhythms into symphonic music. One of his best known compostions is Fanfare for the Common Man. Because Copland had a habit of composing at night with the help of his noisy piano, he had to move several times.
Quote: “So long as the human spirit thrives on this planet, music in some living form will accompany and sustain it and give it expressive meaning.” - Copland
